update

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
About 6 months ago, I began planning to relocate to Europe. The plan was successful and now I'm here in Amsterdam.

The art scene is incredible. They are desperate for good make up artists and hairstylists. I have several shoots lined up already as well as a job at the most famous salon - Rob Peetoom. I'll also be attending their academy for hair stylists.

I had a shoot yesterday/today for a short film for a fashion design student in Utrecht. The photographer/videographer is going out of town for the next few weeks but I'm looking forward to seeing the cut.

May 20 - Demolished building shoot - inspiration is here: http://hakanphotography.com/series/dream/

May 21 - pin up shoot 2 models.

Any advice or suggestions welcome!!

One of my close friends, as well as her photographer friend and I got together one night in Jan. with a bottle of wine, and some paint and created this:

the girl in the picture is my friend, who is also a graphic designer and into lighting,
i did the hair - the paint was a collaboration ;)

that lead to us setting up shoots up almost every Friday with friends and models for the next 4 months.  we started to do a week of research before every shoot, deciding a theme, planning our lighting, coloring, location, set, wardrobe, finding models - as well as designing make up and hair

you can see more here www.beautyfinish.com

The last project I posted about here beautyfinish.livejournal.com/2009/01/20/
lead to a lot more paid work. I ended up working every Select Models shoot up until the beginning of April.

I must say as free lance a make up artist/hairstylist these kinds of events are definitely the way to go.

Not only did I get to travel, and get paid for it... but i received some excellent pictures for my portfolio

Recently - a friend of mine was feeling frustrated with her hair. She felt she couldn't do anything with it and needed a change. I was up for the challenge!

Practice Makes Perfect

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Doing your own make up takes practice. Even make up artists and hair stylists spend generous amounts of time in front of the mirror - experimenting with their own hair or someone elses. When you're just starting out as a MUA/Stylist you may want to bring over friends and have "make up parties". However, for the everyday woman - you want to know what looks best on YOU. The only way to know is to TRY (often trying should happen behind closed doors. Do not wear a new look to work or on a date for the first time. Always test it out first and make sure to see your face in natural light). Before you decide what you want to cover up - decide what you want to feature. Most women only need concealer under the eye to cover dark circles and a light powder to absorb shiny-face. Focus on bringing out the characteristics you love and you'll always look naturally beautiful.

When I was starting to get into doing make up (my own and my friends) - I became a part of online communities that showed off different Eyes of the Day (EOTD) or Face of the Day (FOTD). The feedback that I found there was priceless and it was nice having anonymous constructive criticism. All you need is your make up, a camera, a little time and an open mind.

Make sure you pay attention to the products that you use, liked and disliked, and which colors worked with each other. Play and make it work for you.

July Dreams

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
My July horoscope reads:

"I would like you to imagine your future as if a little movie this month. You are the director of this movie, so you can make it just the way you please. If you can SEE your future in great detail, you can make it happen." - Susan Miller www.astrologyzone.com

If I were to be a part of a movie - instead of being the star - I'd do his/her make up and hair.

I have been doing hair and make up since I was 14 years old. I took Cosmetology through high school and graduated with my license in 2001. Since then I've worked at high end salons all through Miami Florida. Currently, my journey has brought me to Los Angeles California where I continue to book photoshoots and embrace my passion.

Sunday, July 13, 2008 - Portfolio Shoot
